COLLEGE-LEVEL TEACHING PORTFOLIO
Self Portraits: Students were encourage to work life-size, piecing together multiple sheets of paper if necessary, for their self portraits. Lessons in open versus closed composition, foreshortening, anatomy, exercises drawing peers from direct observation and drawing themselves from mirrored reflections preceded this assignment. Cross Contour Grid: To aid in visualizing contours of three-dimensional objects students drew horizontal and vertical line to form the topographical surface of objects. This "map" helps students place objects in relation to other objects, details on the surface on the objects, and shadows and highlights to accurately depict three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional substrate. Two-Point Perspective Fantasy Structure: Students practiced drawing in two-point perspective by developing structures using reference imagery and their imagination. Some students depicted familiar architecture and created fantastical narratives while others invented surreal objects and habitats. Drawing 1, Fall 2022.
Collaborative Still Lifes: To practice transitioning contour drawings to more refined representations of the still life, adding appropriate value, focusing on where light hits the objects and where shadows are cast. Students started their drawing as usual, after 10 minutes, students moved to a peer's easel and spent 5 minutes working on a new drawing. Repeat until each student has worked on all the drawings in the class. At the end of the timed drawing rounds, we examined the artworks we collaboratively created, some more complete than others, each one the work of 15 different artists. The mutual effort involved in these collaborative drawings strengthened peer-to-peer bonds, allowed students to observe different drawing styles, and required students to detach themselves from their artwork. This exercise allowed students to value each other's strengths and weaknesses and build an appreciation for the drawing process rather than the final product. Drawing 1, Fall 2022.
Contour Drawing Mural: Students drew portraits of each other, "round robin" style, sitting at a long table. The objective was to draw every person in the class rotating between regular contour, blind contour, and continuous line contour methods. Rounds were timed, allowing students to switch places at the table, and the resulting artwork was a large collaborative mural.
